The journey began on the Mount of Transfiguration. It began in brilliant light. "There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light" (Matthew 17:2). It must have been truly amazing.
The journey that began on the Mount of Transfiguration in the most brilliant of light ended on Mount Calvary in darkness-deep darkness. Again, it was amazing.
Those who saw the light on the Mount of Transfiguration did not know what to make of the light. Those who saw the darkness on Mount Calvary did not know what to make of the darkness. Jesus knew the difference between the light and the darkness. On the Mount of Transfiguration He knew the light represented when sin and death would be overcome. On Mount Calvary He knew when sin and death were being overcome.
It looked like the darkness had won the day. Those who were determined to have Jesus put to death thought so. The devil must have thought so. Even His followers seemed to think so.
Sin does result in darkness. If Jesus is to take upon Himself my sin, your sin, and the sins of the whole world, He will need to endure deep darkness. The darkness will be evident to all. He experiences the darkness of our sin.
It may have seemed like the last word to those who saw the darkness, but it was not. It may sometimes seem that way for us too. But the light revealed on the Mount of Transfiguration is the true light that the darkness cannot overcome. It is Jesus, the Light of the world!
THE PRAYER: O Jesus, we praise You, for in our darkness, you are Light. Amen.
