The journey from the Mount of Transfiguration began with Jesus meeting with those who had legitimate reasons to be called leaders-Moses and Elijah. Near Mount Calvary it ends with Jesus meeting with two who wished to be called leaders-Pilate and Herod.
What a difference. Two, Moses and Elijah, whose desire was to comfort and assure Jesus. Two who knew Jesus' purpose. Two who understood the significance of Jesus for every person who would ever live. Two who understand why Jesus must suffer and die. Two who had a vision for the future that was glorious and eternal. Two who are spending eternity welcoming all the saints into the presence of the victorious Christ.
The other two, Pilate and Herod, wanted only to mock, ridicule, and judge Jesus. Two who wanted to be amused and entertained. Two who were looking out only for themselves and failed to see any lasting significance in Jesus. Two who just wanted Jesus to die. Two whose only desire for the future was that they would be remembered and honored. Two who only by the grace of God met Moses and Elijah.
There are many who in our day understand and rejoice in the ministry of Moses and Elijah. We see in Jesus what they saw. We are so grateful for their support of Jesus' journey to Mount Calvary. Because of Jesus' love we anticipate an eternity with them.
There are too many who follow the example of Pilate and Herod. They reject the Christ. Their only hope is to be remembered. They will do wrong, unspeakable evil, to be remembered.
THE PRAYER: O Jesus, guard our faith that we may join the company of Moses and Elijah. Amen.
