| "Ultimate Security"
March 08, 2009
Mark 10:17-22 - And as He was setting out on His journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" And he said to Him, "Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth." And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

When the rich man found out what he must do to inherit eternal life, he felt "disheartened" and "sorrowful" because he was told to give up what made him feel secure in his life, his earthly possessions. How would we survive if we were to give up all the possessions in our life? Our solution is to partially trust Jesus and to partially trust in this world. This, of course, does not work. We have to either trust in God or trust in ourselves; there is no half way.
So, as the disciples asked, who can be saved? Jesus' answer is that no thing or person in this world can save-only God can bring us into eternal life. Jesus came to this world and went to the cross to accomplish the impossible. He alone provides ultimate security. Through Christ Jesus' sacrificial work on the cross on our behalf, He has made eternal life possible through faith given us by the Holy Spirit. For when we have faith, God comes into our hearts to work the impossible, and we learn that God is our ultimate security.
THE PRAYER: Almighty God, heavenly Father, I implore You to grant me the strength to trust in Your consuming love that is found only in Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, Your Son whom You sent to free me from my earthly bondage. By His sacrificial death, He has opened the Kingdom of God and welcomed me home. Help me I pray to always live my life according to His will and His Word.
