"UNCUSTOMARY COMPLETENESS "

March 15, 2008

John 19:30. "When He had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit."

I have nothing but the highest respect for the medical profession. Nevertheless, even members from this customarily dedicated calling sometimes leave the job undone. Unfinished work was the reason a North Carolina neurosurgeon was suspended. Those who heard the case agreed that it was wrong for a doctor to take a lunch break in the middle of an aneurysm surgery. They felt it's bad taste to leave a patient's brain exposed without the doctor.

There are many things that we can leave unfinished in this life. Future generations won't remember if the dinner dishes were washed and put away right after supper. There are, I believe, only two things that had to be finished. The first was completed when Jesus breathed His last on the cross and rose on Easter. At that moment, salvation was guaranteed for all who believed. The second is completed when the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts. At that moment salvation becomes ours! With these things finished, everything else falls into place.

Prayerful Practice: Dear Lord, let my days begin and end with praise for Your kindness. Amen.

A Contemporary Custom: Take an hour for yourself. Finish (work on) a project you put off.
