Like the folks who stood at Jesus' cross, humanity has a sinful custom of saying some unenlightened things. As proof, I present Charles Duvelle, who was the Director of the U.S. Patent Office. In 1899 he said, "Everything that can be invented has been invented." In 1927, H. M. Warner, who was chairman of Warner Brothers Pictures, said, "Who wants to hear actors talk?" Should I quote actor, Gary Cooper? He said, "Gone With the Wind' is going to be the biggest flop in Hollywood history. I'm just glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling flat on his face and not me."
As silly as these sayings are, they are brilliant compared to the comments of the crowd. Their ignorance can hardly be measured. They were witnessing the death of the world's King. They were in the presence of God who had made this tree, from which His cross had been constructed. He remained on the cross not because of nails but because of love. If He had come down, what would there have been to believe in? But Jesus did stay, and we are saved. All we can do is stare in silence and gratitude at affection uncustomary.
Prayerful Practice: Dear Lord, fill my mouth with worthwhile stuff and shut it when I've said enough. Amen.
A Contemporary Custom: Many believe their pastor speaks God's wisdom. Make a point of expressing your thanks to his wife for her support of him. |
