"CUSTOMARY SPECTATORS "

March 10, 2008

Luke 23:35. "The rulers even sneered at Him. They said, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'"

The rulers at the crucifixion had religion, but it wasn't a religion that did them much good. Indeed, I've found that those who've "got" religion, customarily say that it has made a profound change in their lives. I was confronted by such an intense conversion, some time ago, when I heard a lady say, "Pastor, I'm so glad I finally got religion -it has changed my life. You know, I have an uncle I used to hate so much that I promised I wouldn't go to his funeral. But since I've become religious, why, I'd be happy to go to his funeral any time."

The rulers at Jesus' crucifixion were glad to see Him die. If anything, His death hadn't come soon enough. In contrast to that attitude, Jesus obediently lived His life and died His death so that no funeral, ever again, would be soul-shaking. His death and resurrection make it possible for His followers to sneer at death itself. The grave makes it possible for those who know Him as Savior to say, "Death, where is thy sting, grave where is thy victory?"

Prayerful Practice: Dear Lord, I repent of my sins that took You to the cross. Let me share the assurance that because You live, I shall live also. Amen.

A Contemporary Custom: Send a card to someone that has lost a loved one this past year. Remind them of your thoughts and Christ's victory.
